Understanding More About Mesothelioma

As serious as cancer
I normally don't touch on topics like cancer, but I felt the obligation to this time. Having had family members die of cancer and many other friends and family members affected by it, I really wanted to help get some information about it out there. Progress starts with knowledge.
Over the years a lot of people have been exposed to asbestos, and this can cause malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. It is a particularly relevant issue in construction as the issues revolving around asbestos weren't known a long time ago and thus older buildings can really be a danger to workers. (I was first told about this as a teenager by my Father who worked in construction, another reason why I'm writing this) Even those who wash the clothes of people exposed to asbestos can be at risk! Asbestos was incredibly popular around the World War II era and over the years millions have been exposed to it and the buildings where it was used.
Symptoms:
Those inflicted may find themselves experiencing chest pains, fluid surrounding the lungs, fatique and shortness of breath, coughing, or even coughing up blood.
They may also develop tumors, blood clots(in the veins, or arteries of the lungs), yellowing of the eyes/skin, or low blood sugar.
You can develop mesothelioma with only 1-3 months of exposure to asbestos and millions have been exposed! The most effective treatment is chemotherapy and I don't believe anyone really wants to endure that. Other treatments include radiation treatment and surgery. However, the prognosis of this diseases is not good. At earlier stages, and with new types of treatment, particularly in chemotherapy, there has been improvement. But unfortunately, curing it is incredibly rare.
Another one of the most significant issues with mesothelioma is the time it takes for the disease to actually manifest in an individual. It takes at least 15 years and is most common at 30 to 40 years after exposure. This makes the entire situation even more confusing and difficult, an individual may not even remember dealing with asbestos!
Diagnosis:
If an individual is experiencing these symptoms and is concerned they may have mesothelioma, there are several things they can request to have done. A chest X-ray and a CT scan can help understand if an individual has mesothelioma, however only other methods can verify it. A biopsy, or a tissue sample, is what really needs to be done to confirm whether or not someone has this rare form of cancer. A thoracoscopy, wherein a camera is inserted into the chest, can be used to take the tissue samples as well as offer a chance to help alleviate any fluids building up in the body.
Legal Action:
Though I wouldn't typically recommend legal action, it's a sad fact that cancer is expensive and can destroy families mentally and financially. If your family is suffering from mesothelioma it may be necessary to take legal action against whoever it was that caused you to become exposed to asbestos. In my opinion, it is a sad reality that it should come down to this, but unfortunately for many families legal action and opening a lawsuit may be the only way for the family to survive. Lawsuits regarding asbestos and mesothelioma have been quite popular as there were so many exposed to asbestos before the dangers were known. Now, many years later, those affected are developing mesothelioma and are finding themselves in a nightmare of a situation and have turned to the legal system as their only option.
I truly hope this article remains useless to anyone. But if you're reading this article and wondering what to do about yourself or the loved one you know with mesothelioma, I really don't know what to say to you. I hope the best for you and your family. Do all your research, and keep your hopes up.
